Dental emergencies, along with your average emergency, can happen when you least expect it. If you do experience a dental emergency, the sense of urgency can be heightened, as teeth are very precious to us. Getting to the dentist as soon as possible after an emergency is an essential part of ensuring that your dental health is not affected to greatly. In the following article we will discuss a few things you can do in between the time you see your dentist.

1. Knocked Out Tooth
For a knocked-out tooth, it is important to save the tooth so your dentist can reattach it. Rinse off the tooth and water or milk, and safely store the tooth by placing it inside your cheek, both to keep it moist, and ensuring that the route is kept intact. Please see your dentist as soon as possible.

2. Cracked Tooth
For a cracked tooth and it’s important to call your dentist and mediately. Taking over the counter medication is a great way to minimize discomfort, and ice packs can reduce swelling on the face.

3. Temporary Dental Crown Comes Off
If you have a dental crown, and you realize that the temporary crown is coming off, try to catch it before you swallow it. Try putting a small amount of Vaseline on the back of the crown to bond it to your tooth. It’s also important to make sure that you don’t buy too hard on the temporary crown, so schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

4. Painful or Infected Tooth
If you have an oral infection, it is important that you get help as quickly as you can. Do not try to treat infection yourself.

5. Broken Jaw or Jaw Pain
If you’ve been in an accident, don’t hesitate to call 911 to receive immediate attention.
